U.S. President Donald Trump said he urged Prime Minister Mark Carney to do more to stop Canada’s wildfires after the two attended the FIFA World Cup final in New Jersey on Sunday.
Speaking after the match, Trump said the smoke from the fires has polluted the air in parts of the United States and suggested Canada could face tariffs or other financial penalties if the problem continues.
Trump first raised the issue on social media Friday, accusing Canada of poor forest management and saying wildfire smoke has cost the U.S. billions of dollars.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford pushed back against the criticism, saying the U.S. should offer help instead of complaining. Ford noted that Canada has assisted American states during natural disasters and said neighbours should support each other in times of need.
