Ontario has approved an environmental assessment for the Webequie Supply Road, a 107-kilometre route that will connect Webequie First Nation to the Ring of Fire, a region rich in critical minerals.
Premier Doug Ford said the project could create thousands of jobs, boost Ontario’s economy, and help supply minerals needed for electric vehicles and other technology. The road is expected to open by November 2030 and is part of a larger network of roads planned for the region.
The province has signed funding agreements with Webequie First Nation, Marten Falls First Nation, and Aroland First Nation to support the project. Webequie Chief Lorraine Whitehead said the community worked to ensure the road reflects its values and long-term goals.
However, not all First Nations support the project. Neskantaga First Nation has set up a land defence camp, saying the road should not move forward without its free, prior, and informed consent. The community said it supports the right of other First Nations to make their own decisions but believes Ontario must continue meaningful discussions with all affected Nations before construction continues.
