Nova Scotia, Ottawa commit more than $300M in joint funding to build new homes

Nova Scotia announced Sunday that it is teaming up with the federal government to spend more than $300 million to build new homes across the province.

Provincial Housing Minister John White and federal Housing Minister Gregor Robertson said the funding will help build more than 1,430 homes. About 930 of those homes will be built at Shannon Park in Dartmouth, including public and supportive housing.

Under the agreement, Nova Scotia will contribute $180 million, while the federal government will provide $120 million through the new Build Canada Homes program. The province says the funding will help keep many of the homes affordable for at least 10 years, and plans also include a new school in the area.

The project is expected to start in 2026 and be built in stages over several years. Officials say the goal is to increase affordable housing as rents continue to rise in Halifax faster than the national average.
