Canadian Jewish groups urge heightened security after attack at Hanukkah event in Australia

Canada’s Jewish community is calling on governments and police to increase security after a deadly attack at a Hanukkah celebration in Australia.

Two men opened fire at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach near Sydney, killing at least 15 people and injuring more than 40 others, including two police officers, according to local authorities. One suspect was shot and killed by police, while the second was arrested and remains in critical condition.

Jewish leaders say the attack has raised serious safety concerns in Canada, especially after a rise in antisemitic incidents worldwide since the start of the war in Gaza in 2023. In recent years, police in several Canadian cities have increased security around synagogues and Jewish schools, particularly during religious holidays.

Noah Shack, CEO of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, said Jewish communities in Canada and Australia have faced similar threats. He said growing extremism and hate toward Jewish people must be addressed quickly. Shack added that his organization is working with police and governments to improve protections and increase funding for security programs that help keep community spaces safe.

Simon Wolle, CEO of B’nai Brith Canada, said governments must act now to protect Jewish lives, enforce hate-crime laws and stop extremist groups that promote violence.

Police services in major cities including Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa and Calgary said they are increasing patrols and visibility around Jewish neighbourhoods and Hanukkah events as a precaution. The Jewish Security Network also asked police to step up patrols, even though there is no known local threat.

Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada stands with Australia and Jewish communities everywhere and will not tolerate terrorism, hate or violence. Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree said federal agencies are working with local police to help keep Hanukkah events safe across the country.
