Canada and U.S. say they are finalizing a trade deal

Canada and the United States say they are close to reaching a long-awaited trade agreement after several days of intense negotiations.

U.S. President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Mark Carney both said the proposed deal would benefit workers, businesses and key industries in both countries. The full details have not yet been released.

Trade officials met for a third straight day on Wednesday after Trump delayed planned 50 per cent tariffs on some Canadian goods. Reports suggest the agreement could lower U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum and vehicles, while Canada may restore U.S. alcohol sales in provincial stores.

Carney said the talks have made “significant progress” and are focused on protecting Canada’s most important industries. He also told premiers that Canada’s dairy supply management system will remain unchanged.

Business groups on both sides of the border say a deal would help reduce uncertainty and strengthen trade between North America’s two largest trading partners
