Carney urges premiers to lift U.S. alcohol bans as Canada-U.S. trade deal nears

Prime Minister Mark Carney asked premiers to return U.S. alcohol to store shelves as Canada and the United States work to finalize a trade agreement.

The request came during a virtual meeting with Canada’s premiers on Wednesday, after U.S. President Donald Trump said the two countries would “probably” reach a deal. While leaders are optimistic, provincial officials say negotiations are still ongoing and no agreement has been finalized.

Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston confirmed Carney made the request, saying it came directly from the trade negotiations. He added that whether Canadians choose to buy American alcohol is a separate issue.

The talks follow Trump’s decision to delay planned 50 per cent tariffs on some Canadian goods.

Meanwhile, Canada’s aluminum industry says U.S. buyers are paying higher prices because American supplies are low and the country still relies heavily on Canadian aluminum.
