At least 1,301 people died during this year’s Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia. Most of the victims were unauthorized pilgrims who endured long treks in the intense 50°C heatwave. In recent days, temperatures in the Middle East soared to unbearable extremes, leading to numerous fatalities.
