The RCMP sent an emergency alert to police forces across Canada, including London police, after a deadly shooting in Montreal that killed a police officer. According to The Globe and Mail, the warning said a 105-page manifesto, believed to have come from Alberta, encouraged people to target police officers and urged officers to stay alert.
London police confirmed they received the alert but did not reveal its contents. The RCMP has not commented.
Montreal police identified the gunman as 25-year-old Seth Scott Hatfield of Lethbridge, Alta. He allegedly killed Const. Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, critically injured another officer, and killed civilian Michel Mizrahi before dying during the shooting.
The recent deaths of police officers have led to calls for stronger action. The London Police Association urged governments to better protect officers, while Ontario Premier Doug Ford called for a national meeting on public safety. London police Chief Thai Truong also honoured Toronto officer Const. Marc Pinizzotto, who was killed earlier this month, calling him a courageous officer who will be remembered.
