After Supreme Court setback, Donald Trump announces 15% global tariff increase

After a setback at the Supreme Court of the United States, Donald Trump says he will raise a new global tariff to 15 per cent using Section 122 of U.S. trade law, after the court struck down earlier duties imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.

The temporary tariff can last up to 150 days without congressional approval. Goods compliant with the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement remain exempt, limiting the impact on Canada, though separate Section 232 tariffs on products like steel and aluminum are still in place and were not affected by the ruling.
