arney raises concerns as U.S. intensifies push to acquire Greenland

Prime Minister Mark Carney says he is concerned about the United States increasing pressure in its push to buy Greenland, after President Donald Trump threatened new tariffs on European countries that oppose the plan.

Trump said eight countries — including Denmark, the U.K., Germany and France — will face a 10 per cent tariff starting Feb. 1. He added the tariff would rise to 25 per cent by June 1 if the U.S. does not reach a deal to buy Greenland.

Speaking at a news conference in Doha, Carney said Canada is worried about the escalation and supports the sovereignty of countries. He said Greenland’s future should be decided by its people and Denmark.

Carney said Canada is working with NATO to strengthen Arctic security and has increased its military presence in the Arctic year-round. He also said he plans to raise Canada’s concerns with Trump if they meet at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Trump argues the U.S. needs Greenland for national security, while his former adviser Steve Bannon said Canada is becoming more hostile to the U.S. and is important to American defence.
