Pearson gold heist trial to hear more testimony from key figure in case

The man sentenced for his role in the 2023 Toronto Pearson International Airport gold heist is expected to continue testifying today at the trial of another man accused in the case.

Arsalan Chaudhary was sentenced to four years in prison this spring after pleading guilty to theft over $5,000. He was also ordered to repay $22 million in restitution over 40 years.

Chaudhary testified Tuesday at the Brampton, Ont., trial of Parmpal Sidhu, who has pleaded not guilty to charges of theft over $5,000 and conspiracy to commit an indictable offence.

During his testimony, Chaudhary said he planned the heist with another man who remains wanted by authorities. He said he ultimately received 30 per cent of the boxes containing one-ounce gold bars.

Prosecutors allege Sidhu, who worked for Air Canada at the time, provided an altered waybill that allowed another man to collect more than $22 million worth of gold and currency from a cargo facility at Pearson airport.

Peel Regional Police have said 6,600 gold bars weighing more than 400 kilograms were stolen on April 17, 2023, after the shipment arrived from Switzerland.
