French President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Mark Carney pledged to strengthen ties between France and Canada during a meeting in Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, a French territory off Canada’s Atlantic coast.
The leaders said they will work more closely on climate, energy, space and trade while defending democracy, international law and national sovereignty.
The visit came as Canada seeks stronger partnerships with Europe amid growing trade tensions with the United States. Macron also backed the European Union’s proposal to make Canada its first associate member and said Canadian liquefied natural gas could help meet Europe’s energy needs.
