The entire population of Summerland, B.C., has been placed under an evacuation order as a fast-moving wildfire threatens the community.
The order affects about 12,000 residents.
The Bald Range wildfire was first reported Friday afternoon about 15 kilometres west of Summerland. Within hours, it grew to more than 5,000 hectares.
The BC Wildfire Service said the fire is showing extreme behaviour, with strong flames, rapid spread and spotting nearly one kilometre ahead of the main fire.
Gusty winds have helped fuel the fire and made it harder for aircraft to fight the blaze.
Some homes have reportedly been lost, while some residents were evacuated by helicopter after the fire cut off road access.
Highway 97 between Peachland and Trout Creek was closed early Saturday morning.
Officials warned that the extreme fire behaviour and rapid growth could continue through Saturday. Residents from Summerland north to Peachland have been told to leave because of the immediate threat.
