Speaking during the company’s latest earnings call, Sony Chief Financial Officer Lin Tao said the company understands that players have an emotional connection to physical games. However, he said Sony believes moving to a digital-only future is the right decision and plans to move ahead carefully.
Tao also said the backlash has not hurt PlayStation’s business. According to Sony, about 82 per cent of game sales are already digital, and the company does not expect ending disc sales to have a negative financial impact.
Sony is working with retailers to keep selling game cases in stores, but instead of a disc, the box would include a digital download code. Critics argue this does little to address concerns about game ownership, preservation, and consumer choice.
While some fans remain unhappy, Sony appears confident that most players will continue buying games digitally. The company says it has no plans to reverse its decision, reflecting a broader shift across the gaming industry toward digital downloads.
