A Toronto toy store owner says rising costs from new U.S. tariffs and Canada’s planned counter-tariffs could force her to lay off staff.
An analysis by University of Calgary economist Trevor Tombe estimates about 87,000 Canadian jobs are at risk if the 50 per cent U.S. tariffs remain in place. Around 52,000 jobs would be affected directly, with another 35,000 impacted through suppliers and other businesses.
Ontario could lose the most jobs (36,100), followed by Quebec (18,300) and British Columbia (11,200). Industries expected to be hit hardest include machinery, electronics, plastics, rubber and forestry.
Labour groups are urging the federal government to expand employment insurance, wage subsidies and work-sharing programs to help workers keep their jobs.
