Ontario Premier Doug Ford unveiled a large “Lake Ontario. Now and Always.” sign along the Canadian shoreline after U.S. President Donald Trump ordered the lake renamed “Lake America” in the United States.
Ford said the lake has been called Lake Ontario for centuries and will keep its name long after Trump leaves office.
The dispute comes as Canada and the U.S. face growing trade tensions. Washington recently imposed 50 per cent tariffs on billions of dollars worth of Canadian goods, and Canada has promised matching counter-tariffs starting next month.
Trump also shared AI-generated videos showing fictional scenes of Lake America, including one where he replaces a Lake Ontario sign with the new name.
Canada has rejected the name change, saying countries are not required to recognize the U.S. order. Prime Minister Mark Carney has also said the lake’s name is, and always will be, Lake Ontario.
