Amazon Canada has removed many off-brand squishy dumpling toys from its website after reports raised concerns about possible health risks.
The soft, gel-filled toys are often sold as calming sensory toys. However, safety experts warn that some counterfeit versions may contain harmful chemicals that can cause skin irritation or chemical burns if they burst open.
Consumer Reports found that the gel inside some toys was highly acidic, with a pH similar to lemon juice or vinegar. Children have reported red, peeling, or irritated skin after contact with the gel.
Health Canada investigating reports
Health Canada says it received 32 reports about squishy toys between April 23 and Aug. 18, 2026. Four reports involved injuries, including headaches, skin rashes, and difficulty breathing.
The agency is reviewing the reports but says it has not confirmed that the toys pose a specific health or safety risk. It also reminds shoppers that toys bought from outside Canada may not meet Canadian safety standards.

Wash skin immediately if the gel leaks out, and throw the toy away.

Do not leave squishy toys in hot cars or direct sunlight, as heat can cause them to burst.
If Health Canada determines a product is unsafe, it will issue a recall through the federal Recalls and Safety Alerts system.
