A strong high-pressure system over the central U.S. is expected to push hot air into Canada this weekend and into next week.
Southern Saskatchewan and Manitoba could see temperatures near 30 C by Sunday, with humidex values close to 40. The heat will then spread into northwestern Ontario before reaching cities like Toronto, Windsor and Ottawa on Monday, where temperatures above 30 C and humidex values near 40 are expected.
Toronto Public Health says 39 people visited emergency rooms for heat-related illnesses between June 30 and July 4 during last week’s heat wave, when temperatures reached 36 C and the humidex climbed to 48.
Thunderstorms and needed rain are possible across parts of the Prairies this weekend, but hot, dry conditions in the U.S. Plains are increasing wildfire risk. Smoke from those fires could drift into parts of Canada.
Forecasters say cooler air could return to the Great Lakes region next weekend, while British Columbia is expected to warm up.
