Meta removes new AI image feature following days of user backlash

Meta has removed a new AI image feature from Instagram just days after launching it, following widespread criticism over privacy concerns.

The tool, called Muse Image, let people use Meta’s AI chatbot to create or edit images using content from public Instagram accounts. Because public accounts were automatically included, many users worried their photos and likeness could be used without their permission.

Meta admitted it “missed the mark” and said the feature is no longer available. The company said it wanted to give users a creative tool but listened to feedback after the backlash.

Groups including the actors’ union SAG-AFTRA and the privacy organization Privacy International welcomed the decision, saying the feature raised serious concerns about consent and the use of personal images.

Meta said it still plans to expand AI features across Instagram, Facebook, Messenger and WhatsApp, and is also developing AI video tools.
