Valve has revealed that the Steam Machine will start at $1,049 for the 512GB version, while a 2TB model will cost $1,349. Adding a Steam Controller increases the price by $79.
The Steam Machine is designed as a console-style PC that connects to a TV, but its price is much higher than systems like the PS5 and Xbox Series X, despite offering similar performance.
Valve says the high price is mainly due to the ongoing shortage of computer components and storage parts. The company says it is selling the device at nearly the same cost it takes to build it.
The component shortage also reduced the number of Steam Machines Valve can produce. At one point, the company was unsure if it would be able to launch the device at all, making its release a major achievement.
