Anthony Head, star of ‘Ted Lasso’ and ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer,’ dies at 72

LONDON — British actor Anthony Head, known for his roles in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Ted Lasso,” has died at the age of 72, his family announced Friday.

Head’s daughters, actors Emily and Daisy Head, said he died from complications related to pneumonia.

He first became famous in the U.K. during the 1980s through popular Nescafe coffee commercials that featured a romantic storyline.

Head later became well known in the United States for playing Rupert Giles, the wise librarian and mentor in the hit TV series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” which aired from 1997 to 2003.

More recently, he played Rupert Mannion, the former husband of Rebecca, in the comedy series “Ted Lasso.”

In a statement, his daughters said they were deeply saddened by his death but proud of the work he left behind.

“Our grief is far greater than the hole he has left behind, but we know his legacy will live on in the shows he was a part of and in the audiences that love them,” they said.
