The gunman accused of killing a Montreal police officer during Monday’s shooting in Côte-des-Neiges has been identified as 25-year-old Seth Scott Hatfield of Lethbridge, Alta.
Quebec’s coroner also identified the other two people who died: Montreal police officer Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, 34, and Michel Mizrahi, 68, a bystander who was caught in the crossfire.
Police were responding to reports of a man with a gun near a hotel when shots were fired. Benredouane was killed, another officer was injured, and Mizrahi also died. Hatfield was killed during the confrontation with police.
Investigators say Hatfield was a philosophy student at the University of Lethbridge and had recently earned a spot on the dean’s honour list. Friends described him as intelligent and interested in history, but said they were shocked by the attack.
Authorities are also examining a document believed to have been written by Hatfield that contained extremist views and support for political violence. Police have not yet announced a motive for the shooting.
The Sûreté du Québec, Quebec’s police watchdog and Alberta police are continuing to investigate the case.
