A civilian, a Montreal police officer and a suspected gunman were killed during a series of shootings in the Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood on Monday. A second police officer was injured and is in stable condition.
Police responded to reports of gunfire around 11:35 a.m. near Trans Island and de Courtrai avenues in the Snowdon area. Authorities later confirmed that the suspect, who was armed with a long gun, was also dead.
An armed-threat alert was issued, and residents were told to stay indoors while police searched the area. The alert was lifted later in the afternoon after officers confirmed there was no longer a danger to the public.
The fallen officer was identified as Const. Mohamed Lamine Benredouane. The civilian victim was identified as 68-year-old Michael Mizrahi.
Witnesses described hearing multiple gunshots and seeing people run for safety. Businesses, roads and public buildings in the area were temporarily locked down while heavily armed officers secured the scene.
Quebec’s police watchdog is investigating the incident. Officials praised the actions of first responders and expressed condolences to the victims’ families.
