Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre says Canadians should not treat people who support Alberta separation as “enemies” and instead should try to understand their concerns.
Speaking at an event in Calgary on Monday, Poilievre said many Albertans feel frustrated with the federal government and want to see more respect for the province.
Albertans will vote on Oct. 19 on whether the province should stay in Canada or move toward another referendum on separation.
Poilievre said the focus should be on keeping the country united and giving Albertans hope for a stronger future within Canada. He blamed federal Liberal policies for increasing separatist feelings in Alberta and said people want change in Ottawa, not a different country.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith also recently encouraged Albertans to remain in Canada, saying the country can still work if governments work together.
Poilievre said Albertans want action, not promises, especially when it comes to support for Alberta’s oil and gas industry.
