Ontario is increasing the speed limit to 110 km/h on more provincial highways as part of a plan that began several years ago.
The Ministry of Transportation announced that starting June 26, speed limits on parts of Highways 401 and 416 will rise from 100 km/h to 110 km/h. More highway sections will see the higher limit added throughout the summer and fall.
Parts of Highway 402 will get the new speed limit on July 31. On August 21, sections of Highways 7, 115, 400, 416, and 417 will also be increased to 110 km/h. Additional stretches of Highways 401, 403, 404, 406, 407, 412, 418, and the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) will follow later in August and September.
Ontario first introduced 110 km/h speed limits on six highway sections in 2022. The program grew out of public consultations and a pilot project that began in 2019, one year after Premier Doug Ford’s government took office.
The higher speed limits will not change the rules for stunt driving. Drivers can still face stunt driving charges if they exceed the speed limit by 50 km/h or more. On highways with a 110 km/h limit, the stunt driving threshold will remain 150 km/h.
The province says the changes are intended to improve traffic flow on highways that have been reviewed and found suitable for higher speeds.
