Work Resumes at Future Homeless Shelter Site

THUNDER BAY – Construction will resume next week at the site of Thunder Bay’s temporary shelter village, with a soft opening planned for later this spring.

The City of Thunder Bay says crews will return to the Alloy Place site on Monday to begin grading the land, improving drainage, excavating, and adding base materials. Electrical work, including the installation of new poles and overhead lines, will follow.

Most of the work will take place off the roadway to reduce disruptions to traffic and nearby businesses. However, temporary closures may affect the nearby recreational trail and off-leash dog area during parts of the construction.

After site preparation is finished, crews will begin building the main community building and washroom and laundry facilities on-site. The individual shelter units will be built off-site and later brought in for installation.

City officials say construction will continue through the spring. The 80-unit temporary shelter village is expected to open in stages later this spring and be fully completed by late spring or early summer.
