Health Canada is warning Canadians not to use soft-shelled hyperbaric chambers, saying the devices can cause serious injuries, spread infectious diseases, and even lead to death.
The chambers, which look like portable capsules, are often promoted by wellness centres as treatments for conditions such as migraines, autism, and cerebral palsy. However, Health Canada says these devices are not licensed in Canada and there is no proof they are safe or effective for those uses.
The agency warns the chambers can catch fire, especially when used with oxygen equipment, and may damage the ears, eyes, lungs, sinuses, and teeth. They can also affect blood sugar levels.
Health Canada is investigating several complaints and says it may take enforcement action. Because the devices are not approved for sale, it is illegal to import, sell, or advertise them in Canada.
The warning does not apply to hard-shell hyperbaric chambers, which are licensed medical devices used in hospitals to treat certain conditions.
