Youth radicalization is increasing in Canada, according to a new report from the Canadian Security Intelligence Service.

A new report from the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) warns that youth radicalization is rising in Canada.

The report says more young people — some as young as 13 — are now involved in counter-terrorism investigations. About one in 10 cases includes someone under 18. CSIS says it often sees minors being influenced to support or take part in violence.

Former CSIS officer Neil Bisson says the trend is concerning but not surprising. He explains that the internet and social media make it easier for young people to be exposed to harmful ideas and groups.

CSIS says many youth are accessing violent extremist content online, including material tied to religiously motivated violent extremism. Experts warn that platforms like social media, messaging apps, and online games can be used to target young users.

Cybersecurity expert Ritesh Kotak says tech companies need to do more to protect youth and control harmful content.

The report also notes several arrests of minors in recent years. In a recent case in Ottawa, a youth was found guilty of terrorism charges linked to an attack plan inspired by Islamic State.
