Father of Eight Remembered as Hero After Deadly Mosque Shooting in San Diego

A security guard who was killed during a shooting at a mosque in San Diego is being remembered as a hero for helping save lives during the attack.

Amin Abdullah, a father of eight, was one of three worshippers killed after two teenage suspects opened fire at the Islamic Center of San Diego on Monday. Police said Abdullah confronted the attackers, started lockdown procedures and helped protect about 140 children inside the school connected to the mosque.

Police Chief Scott Wahl said Abdullah’s actions “undoubtedly” saved lives. The other two victims, Mansour Kaziha and Nader Awad, were also praised for helping prevent more deaths.

The suspects, aged 17 and 18, later died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds. Investigators are treating the shooting as a hate crime after finding weapons and extremist writings linked to the suspects.

Friends and community members described Abdullah as kind, welcoming and deeply devoted to protecting others. An online fundraiser for the victims has raised millions of dollars.
