Canada–U.S. advisory council features former premiers, past Conservative leader

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced a new Canada–U.S. advisory council as the countries prepare to review their trade deal this summer.

The group includes former politicians and business leaders, such as Erin O’Toole, Lisa Raitt, and former premiers Jean Charest and P.J. Akeeagok. It will be led by Dominic LeBlanc.

Carney said the council will give advice on how to strengthen economic ties with the United States and protect Canada’s interests.

The council comes as trade tensions grow, especially after new U.S. tariffs on Canadian industries like steel, aluminum, and autos. Carney said Canada must adjust to changes in how the U.S. handles trade.

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre criticized the move, saying the government should focus more on direct negotiations with the U.S.

Meanwhile, U.S. trade officials say it may be difficult to settle all issues before the July 1 deadline to review the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement.
