Canadian troops withdraw from Iraq alongside NATO allies as Iran conflict escalates

Canadian Armed Forces members have left Iraq along with personnel from NATO as the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran continues.

The alliance said Friday that all staff from its training mission in Iraq have been safely moved to Europe. David McGuinty confirmed Canadian troops and civilians are safe in a secure location.

He said Canada will keep supporting peace and stability with its allies.

The mission, which has helped train Iraqi security forces since 2018, will now operate from Joint Force Command Naples.

The Department of National Defence says Canada is not involved in the war. About 200 Canadian personnel remain deployed across the Middle East, though some have been moved or sent home for safety.
