Canada signals openness to supporting efforts in the Middle East, rules out offensive role

Defence Minister David McGuinty says Canada is open to helping countries in the Middle East as the conflict with Iran continues, but will not take part in any offensive military action.

He said Canada could assist nearby nations if needed, but made it clear the country will not join the fighting. The conflict began when the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran, leading to retaliation and rising tensions across the region.

Iran has since blocked the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil shipments, causing oil prices to rise.

McGuinty said the situation is still changing and Canada is discussing next steps with its NATO allies. He added that Canada has not been asked to join the conflict and is continuing to monitor events.
