India no longer targeting Canadians, senior official says ahead of prime minister’s visit

On the eve of Mark Carney’s visit to Mumbai and New Delhi, a senior Canadian official said the government believes India is no longer targeting Canadians.

Speaking to reporters on background, the official said Canada would not be moving forward with high-level talks if it thought these activities were still happening. He did not give details or say when the alleged actions stopped.

Canadian security agencies have accused India of being linked to violence against pro-Khalistan activists in Canada. This includes the 2023 killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey, B.C. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police has said India’s government was connected to a wider campaign of threats and violence. Canada later expelled six Indian diplomats.

The World Sikh Organization of Canada strongly disagreed with the official’s comments. The group said Sikh Canadians are still facing threats and harassment. It also criticized the Carney government for not doing enough to protect people from foreign interference.

The official said Canada continues to have serious talks with India about security concerns and believes there is a path forward for better relations.
