An FBI investigation is underway after a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer shot and killed a woman in Minneapolis on Wednesday.
Renee Nicole Good, 37, was shot while sitting in her SUV in a residential neighbourhood. Federal officials say Good tried to run over the officer, who then fired in self-defence. U.S. President Donald Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem described her as an agitator who ignored police orders.
Local leaders strongly dispute that account. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said video evidence contradicts the federal version of events, while Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz called the shooting a result of the White House’s “reckless” actions.
A candlelight vigil drew thousands of people to the scene, located near where George Floyd was killed in 2020. Most members of Minneapolis city council are now calling for the ICE officer’s arrest and for federal agents to leave the city.
