Mark Wiseman Named Canada’s Next Ambassador to the United States

Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney has named financier Mark Wiseman as Canada’s next ambassador to the United States at a key moment in the relationship between the two countries.

Wiseman will start the job on Feb. 15 and will help lead talks with the U.S. as the two countries prepare to review their free trade agreement. Carney said Wiseman’s experience and connections will help protect Canadian workers and businesses. Wiseman replaces Kirsten Hillman, who recently resigned.

The Canada–U.S.–Mexico trade deal, known as USMCA, is set to be reviewed in 2026. Former U.S. president Donald Trump negotiated the deal during his first term and included the review clause.

Wiseman, 55, has held senior roles managing major pension funds, including the Canada Pension Plan, and later became a top executive at BlackRock. He now chairs Alberta Investment Management Corp. He is also a longtime associate of Carney.

Canada and the U.S. have one of the world’s largest trading relationships. Billions of dollars in goods and services cross the border every day, and Canada supplies the U.S. with key resources such as oil, electricity, steel, aluminum, and critical minerals.
