OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney is travelling to Europe this week to strengthen ties with the European Union and the United Kingdom as trade tensions with the United States continue.
The two-day trip includes meetings with European leaders and a speech to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France. Carney says Canada wants a closer partnership with Europe based on shared values and common interests.
The visit comes after trade talks with the U.S. stalled and President Donald Trump renewed comments about Canada becoming part of the United States. Carney has said Canada is not seeking to join the European Union, but wants deeper co-operation in trade, defence, research and critical minerals.
The trip is seen as the first step toward a broader Canada-EU agreement ahead of a summit in Montreal later this fall.
