Thunder Bay and communities across the district will take part in a new program to attract skilled international workers and help local businesses fill job vacancies.
The Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Commission (CEDC) announced that the region has been selected for Ontario’s 2026-2027 Regional Economic Development Through Immigration (REDI) initiative.
The program is expected to provide the district with 150 immigration nominations through the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program, which can help eligible foreign workers work toward permanent residency.
CEDC CEO Jamie Taylor said the program will help employers find workers, support business growth and strengthen the regional economy.
The district also took part in a pilot program in 2025 that helped 282 immigrants secure jobs and recommendations for permanent residency.
Taylor said worker shortages remain a major concern for local employers, making immigration an important way to fill gaps and support business expansion.
The region will also continue participating in the federal Rural Community Immigration Pilot, which offers up to 487 spots for 2026.
