The votes will take place on Aug. 31, with candidates competing to replace former MPs Jonathan Wilkinson, Nathaniel Erskine-Smith and Richard Martel. Wilkinson became Canada’s ambassador to the European Union, Erskine-Smith left politics, and Martel was appointed to the Senate.
The Liberals need to win at least one of the three races to keep their majority of seats in the House of Commons. The party currently holds 171 seats, but that number is expected to drop as more vacancies occur.
The byelections come as several other seats remain open, including Saint-Hyacinthe–Bagot–Acton in Quebec. A vote for that riding could be called later this year.
The Liberals have named candidates in all three ridings, while the Conservatives, NDP, Bloc Québécois and Green Party have also announced some candidates.
