Wildfire smoke covers Kelowna, triggering health warnings and disrupting summer activities

Wildfire smoke covered Kelowna, B.C., on Thursday, hiding views of Okanagan Lake, reducing air quality and disrupting summer activities.

Visitors said the smoke arrived quickly, forcing some to cancel outdoor plans, including biking trips. Local businesses also felt the impact, with fewer people visiting beaches and parks. Some business owners said they may have to shorten their hours because of the drop in customers.

The Air Quality Health Index reached 10+, the highest risk level. Interior Health urged people to limit strenuous outdoor activity, especially seniors, young children, pregnant people and those with asthma, COPD or heart disease. Anyone experiencing severe symptoms, such as chest pain or trouble breathing, should seek medical help.

Meteorologists expect the smoke to remain for several days, with conditions likely changing throughout the day as wildfire activity continues. Many Kelowna residents say smoky summers have become a familiar part of life.
