At Least 32 Dead, More Than 700 Injured After Powerful Earthquakes Strike Venezuela

At least 32 people were killed and more than 700 injured after two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela late Wednesday, causing widespread damage in and around the capital, Caracas.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake hit near San Felipe, followed moments later by a stronger magnitude 7.5 quake near Yumare. The agency warned that the final death toll could rise significantly as rescue efforts continue.

Interim President Delcy Rodriguez said dozens of buildings collapsed and emergency crews are working to find survivors trapped under the rubble. She called the disaster a tragedy and offered condolences to families who lost loved ones.

Several countries, including the United States, Brazil, Australia, El Salvador and the Dominican Republic, have offered assistance. U.S. officials said search-and-rescue teams, medical aid and humanitarian support are being sent to help.

Many people were at home when the earthquakes struck because of a national holiday. Witnesses described strong shaking that damaged homes, businesses and public buildings. Caracas’ main airport was also closed after suffering major damage.

Experts say Venezuela is vulnerable to earthquakes because it sits near the boundary of two tectonic plates, and some areas are built on soft ground that can make shaking more severe.
