An evacuation order has been issued for part of Woodlands County after an out-of-control wildfire broke out Monday evening.
The alert affects residents south of Highway 43 near Whitecourt, about 150 kilometres northwest of Edmonton. People in the area were told to leave immediately and bring pets, important documents and medications with them.
More than 100 evacuees have already registered at a reception centre in Whitecourt.
Officials say the fire started as a grass fire and spread quickly because of dry conditions, warm weather and strong winds. The wildfire is now about 55 hectares in size and sits roughly 3.5 kilometres southeast of Whitecourt.
Firefighters, helicopters, airtankers and heavy equipment are working to control the blaze. Night-vision helicopters are also expected to help overnight.
Local leaders say there is concern and uncertainty in the community, but emergency crews are prepared and responding quickly.
