System under growing pressure as chronic homelessness rises in Winnipeg

New data from End Homelessness Winnipeg shows more people in the city are becoming chronically homeless, putting extra pressure on shelters and support services.

As of March 26, 8,248 people in Winnipeg do not have stable housing. Of those, 4,463 are considered chronically homeless—an increase of 104 people in just one month.

The group says this should concern everyone, as each number represents a real person struggling to find stability.

Chronic homelessness means someone has been homeless for at least 180 days in a year, or has gone through repeated periods of homelessness over several years.

The data only includes people known to local agencies, so the real number may be higher.

End Homelessness Winnipeg says more people are losing housing than finding it, leading to longer periods of homelessness. The organization is calling for all levels of government and community groups to work together to improve access to housing and support services.
