Environment Canada recorded a wind chill of –30 at Toronto Pearson Airport at 5 a.m., the first time this winter it has reached that level. Meteorologist Bill Coulter warned that frostbite can happen within minutes on exposed skin.

An extreme cold warning is in effect, and the City of Toronto has opened all available warming centres. Today’s high is expected to be –13 C, feeling closer to –21 this afternoon and –27 overnight.

Cold conditions will continue Saturday, with temperatures feeling as low as –27 in the morning. More normal winter temperatures are expected to return Sunday and Monday.
