Canada Computers & Electronics says a data breach exposed some customers’ personal information, including credit card details. However, many customers say the company has not shared enough information about what happened.
The company said it learned about the breach on Friday and notified affected customers on Monday. It also reported the incident to authorities and gave customers advice on what steps to take. Canada Computers has not said when the breach happened, how long it lasted, or how many people were affected, only that it involved “a few” customers.
Some customers said they were upset by the lack of details. Alex Brochu of Quebec, who works in IT, said he was “appalled” and cancelled his credit card after learning about the breach. He has not seen any fraudulent charges.
Another customer, Jenna Francis-Koch of B.C., said her bank warned her about a suspicious credit card charge in the U.S. She believes it may be linked to the breach and said she never received a notice from the company.
Canada’s federal privacy watchdog confirmed it is reviewing the breach, and York Regional Police said they are investigating. Customers are calling on the company to be more transparent about what happened.
