Expanded Canada-wide pistachio recall now includes Peace By Chocolate items

A Canada-wide recall of pistachios and pistachio-containing products has expanded to include 333 items, including products made by Nova Scotia-based Peace By Chocolate.

The recall is linked to an ongoing salmonella outbreak. According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), affected products were sold online and distributed across the country. Businesses that may carry the recalled items include grocery stores, bakeries, chocolatiers, ice cream shops, restaurants, hotels and other food services that use pistachios.

Several Peace By Chocolate products are part of the recall, including assorted chocolate boxes and specialty bars.

The CFIA says the pistachios involved were imported from Iran. As a result, temporary measures have been put in place, including a ban and stricter rules for businesses importing Iranian pistachios or using them in food products.

Health officials warn consumers not to cook or bake with pistachios if their origin is unclear, as heat may not kill salmonella. Contaminated food may look and smell normal.

Most people recover from salmonella on their own, but the infection can be serious for young children, older adults, pregnant people and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms may include vomiting, diarrhea, fever and chills.
