Recycling programs expand this week, allowing more items in blue bins

Rules about what can go in your blue bin have expanded as of today.

More items can now be recycled after the province’s blue box program shifted full financial responsibility to producers. You can still recycle all the same items as before, but the list has grown.

Newly accepted items include food bags and wrappers such as bread and produce bags, snack and frozen food wrappers, cereal box liners, milk bags and drink pouches. Large plastic bags and coffee packaging — including coffee cups, lids, bags and rinsed coffee pods — are also now recyclable.

Toothpaste tubes, floss containers and deodorant tubes can go in the blue bin, along with takeout containers, cutlery, cups, lids and straws. Blister packs used for pills or small electronics are also accepted.

Some items are still not recyclable, including hardcover books, window glass, drinking glasses and plastic toys. Alcohol containers should still be returned to participating retailers.
