The RCMP is investigating an apparent white nationalist demonstration on Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc land near Kamloops, B.C.
Video shared by journalist Brandi Morin shows people wearing white masks and black clothing with patches linked to the Second Sons, a white nationalist group.
The group was seen holding a sign on an overpass that appeared to question the existence of children’s remains at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School.
Supt. Jeff Pelley said police were called to the area around 7:25 a.m. Monday and spoke with the group before they left and moved through other parts of the city.
Pelley said the demonstration and use of masks appeared intended to intimidate people and create fear and division. Police are investigating and have asked anyone with photos, videos or information to contact RCMP.
Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc Chief Rosanne Casimir called the demonstration deeply concerning and said the safety of community members is a priority.
“Our people have the right to feel safe in their homes, in our community spaces and throughout our community,” Casimir said.
Political leaders, including Prime Minister Mark Carney and B.C. party leaders, condemned the demonstration.
The Heiltsuk Tribal Council also condemned the display and said more action is needed to address anti-Indigenous racism.
The demonstration took place just days before the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Sept. 30.
