Hydro One and LCBO maps label Lake Ontario as ‘Lake America’

Several Ontario government websites are incorrectly showing Lake Ontario as “Lake America” because they use map data from a third-party service.

Hydro One said its outage map is affected by the error and is working with its mapping provider to restore the correct name. Metrolinx, the LCBO and a federal housing map have also displayed the incorrect label.

Ontario Public Services Minister Stephen Crawford said the province is reviewing its websites to ensure they all identify the lake as Lake Ontario. Premier Doug Ford added, “Lake Ontario is and always will be Lake Ontario.”

Google said only users in the United States will see “Lake America” in Google Maps. People in Canada will continue to see Lake Ontario, while users outside North America may see both names.
