An inmate died at the Thunder Bay Jail on July 1, according to Ontario’s Ministry of the Solicitor General.
The death comes weeks after First Nation leaders called for the century-old jail to close, citing concerns about overcrowding, staffing shortages and aging infrastructure.
Officials have not released details about the inmate or the circumstances surrounding the death. The ministry said the matter is part of “multiple investigations” and no further information can be provided at this time.
Thunder Bay Police Service officers responded to the jail shortly before 2:30 p.m. on July 1 after receiving a report of a sudden death. Police said the investigation is ongoing with partner agencies.
The Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service are leading the death investigation. The Special Investigations Unit has confirmed it is not involved.
A new Thunder Bay Correctional Complex is currently being built on Highway 61 and was expected to replace the existing jail and correctional centre. However, both current facilities are expected to remain open for at least five years after the new complex opens.
A recent inquest into the 2020 death of Kevin Mamakwa at the Thunder Bay Jail recommended that Ontario create a plan to close the jail within five years of the new facility opening.
