Health Warning Issued for Popular Shampoo Sold in Canada

Canadians may want to check their bathroom shelves after a popular shampoo was recalled in the United States.

On July 1, 2026, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced a recall of certain lots of Oribe Serene Scalp Densifying Shampoo. The recall was issued by Kao USA after the bacteria Pluralibacter gergoviae was found in some products.

While the bacteria is not considered a major risk for healthy people, those with weakened immune systems could be more vulnerable to infection. Kao USA is advising customers to stop using any affected shampoo immediately.

The recall applies to the 8.5 oz and 33.8 oz bottles made between Feb. 21 and Feb. 26, 2026. The affected lot codes begin with “YR” and are printed in black on the bottom of the bottle.

Oribe products are sold in Canada through retailers such as Sephora, Walmart and Amazon. As of July 6, Health Canada had not issued its own recall.

Customers with affected bottles can contact Kao USA for a replacement or to report any problems related to the shampoo.
